This is a balloon type torch, which is a decades old design. Despite being eclipsed by multiple torch designs it is much more versatile, being able to toast without having to wiggle the lighter around from a considerable distance away. It also works for pipes. Think of it as a big fat but soft blue flame. It does use a bit of fuel, so perhaps a flat flame design might be a better fit for some folks.
