The Alec Bradley's burned a little inconsistent to suit me. Overall I enjoyed all of the cigars. They had good flavor;providing an enjoyable, relaxing smoke.

Although I'm still a relative newcomer to the world of premium cigars, I've been having a lot of fun exploring different brands and styles as I go through the process of deciding what suits me best. That's why I was particularly interested in this "Rocky vs Alec" offer-- I had heard lots of good things about both brands, but I hadn't had a previous opportunity to smoke either one.

Quite frankly, I expected the whole smoking adventure to end as a toss-up between the two challengers. At least that's what the reputation and reviews on these brands had me believing.

But I was wrong! In my book, Alec Bradley wins hands-down over Rocky Patel, at least for the specific cigars featured with this selection, and not at all for a reason I would have suspected in advance.

Each of the Bradleys I smoked provided a thoroughly enjoyable experience, one that had me wishing for a duplicate stick real soon. But that wasn't the case with the Rocky Patel smokes at all. In spite of the high marks most reviewers give them, I found the Rocky Patels riddled with the kind of problems that were a major annoyance even to an unsophisticated cigar fan like me-- uneven burns, surprising hot spots in unexpected places in the smoking experience, some big challenges with canoeing, and above all some major problems with the wrappers. In some cases the wrappers would begin to crack and peel during the smoke, and in one instance I had to abandon the Rocky Patel altogether because the faulty wrapper had turned the whole cigar into a mangled mess when I was scarcely halfway through the smoke!

I'm not sure if the wrapper problems were due to manufacturing standards (which I'm reluctant to believe) or to problems in storage or other handling (which is what I suspect). I'm not enough of an expert to know for sure, but on one of the Rocky Patel cigars I did notice a bunch of very fine white specks on one portion of the wrapper-- could this have been some kind of fungus? Oddly enough, that particular cigar smoked a little more smoothly than the other Rocky Patels, but the taste wasn't all that great, and it certainly didn't leave me wanting more of the same!

I may try a Rocky Patel again sometime, but I'm definitely not in a hurry to order a box anytime soon. If there had been problems with just one of the Rocky Patel sticks in the selection, I'd feel inclined to be much more forgiving-- anybody can have a bad day, and it's certainly possible for a mistake to slip past quality control now and then. But the fact that so many of these cigars had problems left me pretty much turned off to the brand. I'm going to need a little more convincing before I'll be willing to give it my endorsement.

Anyway, though, I do appreciate having had the experience of comparing the two brands back-to-back. It was definitely the kind of thing I need more of as I go about refining my personal smoking preferences.
