Comments about SERIE V MELANIO GRAN RESERVA LIMITADA Oliva Serie V Melanio Churchill Maduro Single:
I have been picking up a number of sizes of the Oliva V Melanio over the last few months primarily through Thompson's auction site and squirreling them away in my aging humidors. Today I took out one of the Churchill Maduro's and would describe my experience with this cigar in one word... "WOW".
This Churchill presents immaculately with a darker brown wrapper with expert detail to the seams. While there are a couple of larger veins, the Torcedor working on this cigar even made sure the larger vein was to the back side of the bands. The cut was clean and both ends of the cigar "box-press" consisted more of an oval, with soft rounded edges. The initial aroma of the cigar is of mild tobacco, spice and red pepper. The light is clean and thorough with initial aromas now being confirmed but with a decidedly medium strength and body. Instead of being overpowered by pepper, as is not uncommon with some Oliva V (my favorite is the King B), I found that the taste sensations were remarkably balanced, and, dare I say, in harmony with each other. The draw is a perfect firmness for a 7" cigar, and the smoke production is good. Ash is light grey without flaking and falls off at approximately 1 1/2 inches.
As the smoke progresses, the flavor experience becomes one that I will readily admit I never had in 40 years of cigar bliss. Distinct notes of floral, red and black pepper, herbs, nuts and cocoa or chocolate, floated in and out throughout the entire smoke. I probably missed a few flavors, even with what I consider a discerning palate, they were coming so quick. Spice and light pepper stayed on my lips, and the front edge of my tongue. This is a cigar that when retro haled, produced even more flavor points. Smoke was creamy on the tongue, but not thick. The medium effect grew to medium full after the first half before tapering off towards the end. I finally laid the cigar down short of 1 1/2 hours, there being no more nub to smoke.
In summary, this is a cigar that anyone could smoke and greatly enjoy. However, a real aficionado with a developed palate can only love all that this cigar brings. I don't know how they did it, but nothing I have ever smoked matches this cigar. Being decidedly cheap, I would normally take away a star for the price. But for this cigar, even I can not do that. WOW.
